The issue here isn't "grant selection system", but 8% payline. This applicant received exceptional scores.https://twitter.com/danjlurie/status/1162239877947088897 …

Absolutely brutal. If you do life sciences research in the US, you’ve heard these kind of horror stories many times before, but usually not all in a single narrative. I don’t know what an ideal grant selection system looks like, but it’s definitely not the one we have now. https://twitter.com/HCCvPDAC/status/1162076390226681856 …

Great point. But I’m not sure it’s entirely separate. The current system isn’t designed to endure an 8% payline. Should the payline be molded to fit the system or vice versus?

After a certain point, you just keep submitting the same damn grant, maybe shopping study sections, until its funded. My record is 9 submissions. Just had another that took 5.

          10. Funding is a random process.

My last grant went from triaged to 4th percentile with almost no changes (I actually just took 2 figures of preliminary data OUT). Inwaited 2 years, spent about an hour and submitted that puppy. Funded. Random. I'm at peace with it

Problem is again, gotta scoop yourself eventually. Can’t hold onto data for several years. The kids have to graduate at some point.
