Where I used to work, a lot of technical folks looked down on the level 1 tech. support folks, because they were not highly technical. They thought of level one as a stepping stone to level two. But we had level one folks who stayed there their whole career. (More)

Because their skills were dealing with customers and making them happy. And as a developer, if I had to deliver bad news to a customer, I *always* went through level one, because they were masterful at delivering the message in a way that was well-received.

Totally agree. “Hard” skills are important but to work in a team, “soft” skills are crucial. I like the term “foundational skills” because that also implies to me that they are transferable between different roles and industries, which “hard” skills wouldn’t be. 1/2

Since English is my 2nd language, I was very confused when I first heard the term “soft skills.” I’ve looked it up and what I understood was that the term was coined by the US military trying to distinguish between skills involving a machine (hard) and other skills (soft) 2/2
