    1. US news cycles are uniquely unsuited to covering one big story that doesn't have lots of BREAKING news, but is instead about our democracy breaking due to Republican authoritarianism. We need to deliberately counteract that tendency in two ways, to help focus public attention.

What happened today is huge. PACER reform passed the house during last Congress. Now it's headed for a senate vote with a gazillion cosponsors. When this bill passes, it will open up what's probably the biggest paywall in the world.

The House closed a gap in ethics law today, voting 422 to 4 to extend the STOCK Act's reporting obligations to federal judges. Applies to the SCOTUS and all the way down. When judges buy/sell/trade certain assets, those transactions will be disclosed beyond just annual reports.

On this day, 105 years ago, Montanans sent Jeannette Rankin to the U.S. House of Representatives—making her the first woman ever elected to Congress. Jeannette’s trailblazing legacy continues to inspire folks across our state and country to this very day.

A reminder that the last time the Senate voted on renewal of the Voting Rights Act (in 2006), the bill passed 98-0, including the vote of Senator McConnell. He never called VRA preclearance a power grab then.

I’ve ridden the subways my entire life, my late grandmother was a transit cop 😫 and you are a whiny fucking baby to fear the subway this much, the idea that guns on the subway would be anything good only occurs to people who never encountered guns on the subway

Interesting. After Rep. wins yesterday, haven't heard claims of election being "stolen" or "rigged." Yet, it's the same election officials doing the same job they did in 2020.

Every times Supreme Court arguments delve into Second Amendment history I'm reminded of Hartley's famous opening line. "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there."

Can you bar carrying a gun on subways? Can you bar carrying a gun into polling places?

It was inevitable....and the Court knows it. If the plaintiffs win this gun case, then the next target for 2A absolutists is regulations on where you can carry a gun. That's why Justice Roberts is homing in on this.

Sotomayor: there were laws about the state getting to decide who gets to carry arms.... The 14A protects against discriminatory denials, but the authority has existed throughout history, right?
