Excited to share my new work with and Jenny Greene on searching for optically variable active galactic nuclei in 35,000 nearby low-mass galaxies using data from the Palomar Transient Factory: Read on to learn about some of our key results! (1/10)

"And then something unexpected happened. I realized I could do a lot of other impossible things." Love this piece by - running has brought me a confidence in myself that carries over to so many other parts of life (ps- who is the astrophysicist who qualified?!)

Something extraordinary is unfolding for American female distance runners, and it’s making all of us better. I spent last year aiming for an impossible goal. I failed but it was unexpectedly one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever tried.

“With the huge amount of about 50,000 new artificial satellites for telecommunications planned to be launched in Medium and Low Earth Orbit, the mean density of artificial objects will be of >1 satellite for square sky degree”. This. Is. A. Problem.

Now, I can see a situation where we, as humans, would GLOBALLY decide that deploying a -like network would be to our global benefit. But no such thing actually happened - an US-based company is allowed to pollute the GLOBAL sky, for private profit. That is insane!

So, fundamentally, this is not about few astronomers who are annoyed that some of their data will be affected. This is about a private, for-profit, US-based company destroying human natural, GLOBAL heritage, for no good reason, and with no due process whatsoever. Insane!

New study shows that it is possible to provide near-worldwide internet coverage with just 4 high altitude satellites (as opposed to thousands of low-earth orbit satellites)

I absolutely adored ’s colloquium talk today - a testament to the power of threading a clear narrative through a science talk. Plus I got to see some great work from fellow Pomona alumni and !

And here comes version 2.0 - higher orbits, so visible all night long. Sky pollution isn't just for dawn and dusk anymore!

The brightness of the satellites caught SpaceX off guard, but they continue to launch the unmitigated satellites because fuck it

Cooper from also reiterated that the brightness of the satellites was a surprise to them. Kind of seems like a big thing to overlook.

Concerning: is going to continue to launch the original bright satellites until they figure out how to effectively decrease the satellite brightness.
