Very proud to share my latest preprint! We show ✨genetic, epigenetic, neural, & behavioral✨evidence that differentiation of ESR1 (estrogen receptor alpha) contributes to the evolution of aggression in the white-throated sparrow. 🧬🧠🐦 👇👇👇

A provocative view has taken psychology by storm––maybe babies come equipped with social knowledge. I used to subscribe to this view, but I no longer do. To find out why, check out my latest paper now online at Perspectives on Psychological Science.

Using my first tweet to mention a recent preprint. This builds on our earlier work () documenting powerful illusions of size/area . Folks have asked how we know that 'additive area' is the right answer. This (brief) paper answers that question!

and I have a new paper out providing an overview of how research in metacognition over the past 20 years has produced a strong case for the existence of explicit memory in nonhuman primates.

Using fMRI to study dogs' sense of number. Read all about it! Now out in Biology Letters.

Saw this just after my last tweet. Very relevant to why face face neurons may arise in a randomly initialized network. The question of course is whether this is at all similar to the organization of a newborn's brain.

The REALLY weird part is that a randomly initialized ANN has face units. However, we wouldn't be surprised if out of >50k units some would be selective for curves, so it perhaps makes sense that, by chance, you would get more selectivity for face-like stimuli than complex objects

Feeling too junior to wade into this debate, but it has been super interesting to follow. Good points on both sides. But has it now gone on long enough that someone should immortalize it into a song? Call it Marcus and the Machine.
