If you wanted to work in operating systems but left or never joined because of Linus Torvalds, please reply to this tweet or DM me. RTs for reach appreciated!

not just Linus specifically but dudes like him, yes and not just operating systems, the whole FOSS ecosystem seems kind of toxic. it's a shame because otherwise I'd love to contribute

Ummm, *not* entire Foss communities. From a first hand experience, @gnome has the nicest awesomest people in the Foss community. I guess KDE too, but I don't know about them.

Reading this doesn't make me feel like this is true. "FOSS seems toxic to me" -> "No, you're wrong. My community is great" makes it seem both that giving gentle feedback is hard/may not be a strong skill in the community and seems like NotAllFOSS rhetoric.

Well, the tweet I was replying to generalized and grouped all FOSS communities together, and so I gave them a first hand example of an awesome FOSS community!

quite frankly, you strike me as someone who's young, eager, excited about all things software... and male. in other words, someone who'd be welcome in pretty much any FOSS community. so the fact that you've had a positive experience doesn't actually tell me anything useful

Oh, seeing another reply with the link to the NotAllMen thing, I kinda get it. I didn't realize your tweet/reply was about gender equality issues in foss. My bad, I get it now, agreed.

I think it's more about majorities. If you're not "like" everyone else, people can be less empathetic, or just outright horrible. It just so happens that gender is a very strong majority at this time.

I did a little kernel work at RedHat and while there were some nice folks the overall tone of LKML was sufficiently off-putting that I mostly crossed it off my list of communities I could work in. Subsequent abusive behavior from the top reinforced this decision.

(Including, full disclosure, a weird sequence of interactions starting with “monotone is great can you make it faster” and ending — after copying all the ideas, which I don’t mind — with public trash-talking our work while evidently never having read the code. Bit of a red flag.)

It was clear from relatively early on that if you cared about people AND were interested in systems programming you would have to choose, so I picked people. My friends’ experience with the kernel community was a huge influence

All good developers start as incompetent ones, because nobody can magically be competent without practice. If you destroy the confidence of all incompetent developers instead of helping them grow, the industry will stagnate.
