Computerization, national defense, mass retailing (supermarkets, catalogs), etc. Sometimes pieces of the system are developed separately and for different uses so it's hard to see the whole cost

2/ we could even do a discipline by discipline based one... like 1000 cancerbio/devbio/immunology/genereg/stemcell/cellbio/etc papers you need to read before you die.... I’m sure bio grad students would buy them! And there’s a ton of grad students in the world. ???

I would actually love a “1000 biology papers you need to read before you die” book. About 1000 pages long: each page focused on 1 paper, with its original abstract or summary, a brief “review” of why its important, and 2-3 suggested further readings. Would anyone buy this?

Does anyone in my network know of a good way to go about learning Industrial Organization economics? Unlike many subjects there aren’t really many online lectures and such...

THREAD: I’m pretty sick of the poor quality debate about whether to involve Huawei in the roll-out of 5G in the UK and elsewhere. The simple fact is that it is NOT the only provider of 5G networks - but it is the largest and (surprise!) the CHEAPEST

Yes we do. It’s called antibiotics. And it is a field well known to investors to be toxic, which is why discovery/development has ground to a halt.

People are absolutely right to read the latest FDA details on Sarepta's drug approvals and wonder what is going on. It's bizarre and infuriating, and it's getting worse:

It’s a terrific idea for the US to embrace the term “developing nation.” Far better to be developing—growing, expanding, and improving—than to be developed: which means to be finished, completed, and done.

This piece raises an interesting question. What types of firms are best at generating radical, path-breaking innovation? Startups? Large F500 companies? Smaller, but still sizable companies? I'm sure you've done research on this.

Provocative insight from excellent Bernstein Research: Medicaid is highly incentivized to stick with older branded biologics because of heavy rebates on incumbents that can make them virtually free, and has little to no incentive to adopt biosimilars—frustrating low cost entrants

Literally every “gotcha” the media has turned up on Pete Buttigieg’s McKinsey stint is horseshit.

I just found out that David Hounshell is writing a sequel to his book on Mass Production and I honestly I'm more excited than I was for Harry Potter and the Heathly Hallows.

For example, individuals keep talking about how "modern technology" will allow for positive economics, but I'd like to see this explained a bit more deeply.

Is anyone aware of a good resource that discusses the engineering and economic challenges of actually building a supersonic airliner? Unfortunately, aerospace engineers seem not to post much on Hacker News. maybe?

Oh look. Academic and Fed funded trials fail to report trial results by legally required deadlines. Unfortunately, there isn’t evil conspiracy story to be written here. There goes a Pulitzer opportunity...
