Since I'm on the subject of movies, let me talk about one I did like, a movie that's one of my faves - and of just about everyone else, too: "The Wizard of Oz."

As I said a couple of weeks ago, it's a shame it had such a limited release. I know new movies get priority, but it's not every day people have a chance to see "The Wizard of Oz" in a theater. If "The Matrix" could get four showings a day, surely Dorothy and friends could.

What stood out most about "The Wizard of Oz" this time is how basic its plot and narrative structure are. It really has only seven parts and they're arranged in quite simple, linear fashion: Kansas, Munchkin Land, the Journey, Emerald City, the Witch, the Wizard, Kansas redux.

You can break some of these acts into smaller pieces (e.g., the Journey where Dorothy meets her companions one by one). But overall the movie is the opposite of complex. It's the most straightforward thing in the world. But that's why it works so marvelously.

If the movie has one flaw it's that it never quite hits the peak of Munchkin Land again the rest of the way. But then the Munchkin Land sequence is one of the great set pieces in the history of film. You can't really expect a movie to top itself. And it doesn't need to.

But "The Wizard of Oz" doesn't need me to sing its praises. It has that rarest of things: staying power. "Avengers: Endgame" made $3 billion? Pfft. It's ephemera in comparison.

If "The Wizard of Oz" does hit a theater near you, go see it. Now if only they'd do a limited release of "The Adventure of Robin Hood." I would pay good money to see that on the big screen.

I saw it with my daughter in IMAX a few years ago. And while, at that scale, you really notice the artifice of it all, that only made it more charming.
