Three states have filing deadlines this year and three more in January. But the remaining thirteen all have deadlines in March or later. And all nineteen primaries are after March 1. What do you think happens to Thom Tillis on 3/3 if he votes to remove Trump on 2/3?

The primary dates are what matter. Four senators have primaries in March. Maybe impeachment's not done by then. But then five have primaries in May, seven in June, two in August, and one in November. You think an impeachment trial's going until September? Good luck with that.

The calendar is the issue here. If the schedule holds per current speculation, an impeachment trial would be finished in January or February. Which means every GOP senator up next year would face primary voters after rendering their verdict on Trump. Hello, sword of Damocles.

Now maybe you believe a lot more Republican senators up for reelection next year are going to decide to join Pat Roberts and Lamar Alexander and retire. But me, I have my doubts about that.

This is handy, thanks for posting. Question: why do some have runoff dates & others don’t?
-
Because most states don't have runoffs.
