That's happened to all of us, I'm sure. You listen to a song dozens or even hundreds of times and then all of a sudden you hear it. I wonder if that's how Led Zeppelin and/or Tolkien fans felt the first time they heard Robert Plant singing about Gollum.

thing is, that didn't feel obscure to me back when i first heard that song as a kid. but i'm a trivia nerd so i have very poor ideas of what is and isn't obscure

Right. But you pay closer attention. I've been listening to that song probably since it came out and tonight was literally the first time I noticed Billy Joel sings about Beau Brummel in it.
