Joe Lieberman & Lowell Weicker can both attest folks in their party get over unpopular votes

To answer “interposing between an unfit president and his foreign policy” is morally praiseworthy. But the Secretary’s job is to advise and execute, it is dishonest and unconstitutional in character to accept the job under false pretense.

Several of these actions are morally praiseworthy in and of themselves, but it’s hard to give credit when taken together.

Now he is calling Trump a ”tinhorn dictator”, and saying that he himself will be remembered for all of history for voting to convict and remove from office. My bet is he won’t logically follow through and endorse the Democrat in 2020.

This man dropped everything to accept Trump’s birther-era endorsement, then denounced him for spreading birtherism years later. He denounced Trump as totally unfit for office, then offered to be Trump’s Secretary of State.

Last night, Nancy Pelosi tore up the state of the union speech. Today, the Senate tore up the articles of impeachment.

LOL at the alerts on my iPad: "Republicans save Trump's presidency" and "Trump acquitted, ending gravest threat to his presidency." He was never in danger. That the biggest drama was Mitt Romney's voting to convict him on one article shows how anticlimactic this all was.

I think I speak for all of us when I say it's a good thing these guys weren't in charge of counting the Senate impeachment votes.

Seems like the batch of the results that put Buttigieg into first place in the second-round voting are going to be fixed - but I think if we're talking "who won the popular vote" in Iowa, the first-round results (where Sanders leads) is the better measure h/t

Manchin is retiring. Sinema probably correctly figured the potential general election bennie wasn’t worth assuring a primary challenge in ‘24

I repeated somewhere else, but I’ll say it again. Politics is about coalition-building and trust. If you forfeit those two, you can be an effective legislator. What GOP politician running for office wants his endorsement now? How is she going to support his colleagues?

(That said, if it's Biden/Buttigieg/Sanders/Bloomberg/whoever vs. Sanders in a 1-on-1 and Sanders is running even a few points worse against Trump, maybe it would still have a similar effect, just given Dem desire to beat Trump)

Once it got to Dukakis vs. Jackson, it was easy for Dukakis to unite most of the party, because polls showed a *massive* general election difference - Dukakis beating HW Bush (haha) and Jackson losing by 20+. But in the '20 Dem field, there won't be differences nearly that vast.

Jackson then won big in MI and there was a brief Dem establishment freak out about potentially having to nominate him. But Dukakis beat Jackson in NY, Gore proved to be a regional phenomenon, Simon failed to register anywhere else, and Dukakis rolled to a first ballot nomination.

I'm now thinking a lot about parallels between this Dem race and 1988. Back then, IA produced a muddle and multiple candidates (Dukakis, Gore, Jackson) won multiple states on Super Tuesday. Then Paul Simon won IL as a favorite son and a brokered convention seemed imminent:
