UPDATE: The Senate #COVID19 bill summary includes $400M in election assistance for states to prepare for 2020 elections. This is not enough, but it’s more than double what was originally there ($140M) – a critical increase after the civil rights community demanded more funding.

Still awaiting bill text, but summary says it will cover options for states “including to increase the ability to vote by mail, expand early voting and online registration, and increase the safety of voting in-person by providing additional voting facilities & more poll-workers."

This language is important as states move to enact substantive reforms & rules ahead of primaries and the general election. As a reminder, here's what @civilrightsorg and more than 150 organizations want states to consider as they work to protect the vote: https://bit.ly/2J4hfxd

The time to enact these reforms is now. States need money now. We've been asking for at least $2B, and civil rights groups will fight to ensure funding is included in the next bill while we work in the states. We DON'T have to choose between public health & functioning democracy.

400 million seems like a budget for a box of tissues at each poll. This is very disappointing.

At the primary in MN the election judges brought tissues and hand sanitizer.

It is progress. Yes, more is needed, but as you say it does double original amount. We know GOP went kicking and screaming on this one.

$2T in the bill and only $400M for elections? So sad. This next election will determine if the US becomes a third world country with only the uber rich and the expendable poor or we return to the republic that we were.
