    The topmost driver-side bolt was a PAIN to get in, but after a suggestion to remove the transmission cross member to tilt the drivetrain to a better angle, I was able to get it torqued up. Absolutely no tool clearance without doing that.

    Pushing my momentum from the Wrangler to the Firebird while I'm waiting for parts. Got the bell housing bolts in and torqued. I'm surprised that there are only 4 of them.

    So I've dropped $65 for a new EGR from to observe if replacing the valve will solve this high idle issue. I'm not 100% convinced this will solve it, but I trust them to get me the right part over my local shops that have no clue what a carburator is.

    So back to that "leak". Without the EGR, the vacuum is around 25-30mBar, but with the valve it drops to 15-17 mBar, and the EGR is still not activated. Not even a vacuum hand pump can hold a vacuum on the valve. Something's not right.

    The vacuum diagram is a little helpful, but it is still confusing. A lot of these hoses seem unnecessary from my dealings with more modern vehicles.

    Not having enough vacuum makes sense because if I pump the vacuum powered brakes, it can at times bring the idle back to a more normal speed from a higher idle. Or at least I think it does.

    Ideally, any amount of vacuum should trigger the EGR, but with that controlled leak, there's not enough vacuum in the system to actually lift up the valve for it to operate correctly, thus causing a rich air/fuel mixture and causing a high idle.

    One document I pulled up stated that there's a "controlled vacuum leak" in the replacement EGR I installed a few years ago. Other documentation I've read said that there should not be one. This conflicts logically, so then I decided to start looking further.

    So it's not the idle air motor. With some fancy troubleshooting and a look at maintenance history, I've come to the hypothesis that it's the EGR valve.

    So I've been doing a bit of research. It looks like Reaper has for some time had Python support through their ReaScript system. I was originally looking at JSFX, but this makes much more sense.
