What aspect don't you like (without calling out names). I normally hear good things.

Intellectually incurious, incredibly tribal. Pretty low levels of expertise when it comes to systems programming. It's basically impossible to say "Haskell has X but Rust does not" since someone will chime in with a totally useless take and the community will back them up.

And like... it's so common I have no names to name! The higher-ups in the Rust community are better about this but fundamentally engaging with the Rust community is a waste of time if you know what you're talking about and don't want to spend your time re-explain basic things.

I feel like the Rust community is big enough now to have developed a few strata. Unfortunate to hear about the tribalism etc. Hope not to have been a symptom of that; always appreciate views from people with more knowledge

That's fair. I know people in the Haskell community who stand out due to being in it, and I'm sure the Rust community has good people, but from an outsider perspective it's just not worth it for drive-by engagements.

What feature is the number one thing you'd want? I'd have expected you'd draw more from ATS than Haskell for a language like Rust.

It's not that I *want* TCO or monads in Rust necessarily, merely pointing ut that Rust doesn't have them is enough to get people saying transparently false things and backing each other up.

Yeah. The best advice I ever received while doing a PhD was “you are not your PhD project”. Clearly people get invested in languages the same way; they think that using / knowing a language is part of their identity, and thus criticising it is personal.

This is true. However, people do invest a huge amount of personal time and energy in languages and their eco-systems, and feel their choice to do so is attacked when the language is attacked.

There's a difference between "attacking" and "pointing out differences." And it's possible that criticism is sometimes constructive, especially if you have a strong background in another language.

I guess it's great for helping new people learn Rust but not necessarily great if you're trying to grasp its limitations (data structures with cycles, anyone?). This is generally a problem with languages in industry, people evangelise in the hopes that it gets adopted
