New "fix politics" article on Ranked-Choice Voting does a good job of highlighting some of the positives (civility, diversity), but complexity of RCV comes with downsides. My latest article shows RCV decreased voter turnout on avg 3-5 points.

The significance of Sen. Romney voting to convict cannot be overstated. No Senator in history has ever voted to remove a president of his own party from office. As democratic norms are increasingly violated in our polarized time, ...

Romney is the first senator to vote to convict a president of his own party, but it seems just as notable to me that he was also the party's previous presidential candidate

Small thread on this London Breed initiative. These are just thoughts so welcome the conversation.

Question: how can LA policymakers reduce traffic, pollution, and housing costs? Answer: stop forcing apartments and stores to build parking. My op-ed in today's has more:

Nice piece here on the history and future of a system that, from the perspective of the entrenched majorities it replaced, elected too many “kooks, communists and Negroes” to which I say, bring it...

SC 2020, then, is a kind of perfect storm for crossover voting incentives (or the disincentives are low anyway). An early open primary, no GOP primary opposite it and with no partisan public oath. 10/

One observation after seeing a Bernie rally upclose in IA. The scorched-earth tactics against other Dems still practiced by Sanders and his campaign are totally unnecessary, and counterproductive at this point if he actually wants to be elected president.

This took me a long time to understand: homes get cheaper over time if & only if enough new ones are being built to keep up w/ population. The California finding “it takes 65 million years for new construction to become affordable” is a locally specific symptom of underbuilding.

For years, California police officers come into court & testified as “gang experts.” But many of the ppl they convicted--all black and brown--were not in a gang. It was all made up. And the scandal is only getting bigger and worse.

The Bay shouldn't need to subsidize a family of four earning $120,000. It should build market rate housing until there are no longer subsidies necessary

Sanders did get a modest turnout bump over 2016 in the precincts he won, and the way Iowa state delegate equivalents are apportioned based on number of 2016 precinct attendees is hurting him a bit in translating votes -> delegates

Updated Iowa turnout estimate: Applying the simple total vote/precinct reporting projection with the new 70.8% reporting at midnight eastern time, the total turnout in the Iowa caucus is 181K, which is slightly higher than 2016's 171K, very unlikely we'll reach 2008's 236K
