Since I can't sleep, let's talk about transformation. This is all from my head. Transformation can happen at all scales: personal, relational, societal. But it's not something that can be done. It's a natural process that can only be allowed. 1/

Not sure ppl realize how Silicon Valley management practices are optimized for, well, Silicon Valley (and the ppl drawn to SV). To call them "advanced" or "mature" -- to blindly copy them -- is misguided. In my travels, I've seen some truly interesting and powerful models..(1/2)

1/ Boyd's OODA loop is probably the most valuable mental model I know of for reasoning about the increasing pace of change in the world. But - it's was formulated at a time before much of current complexity science. What's missing?

Accidentally advising a client on OKRs (worked on them a lot at Twitter), I realised how important verb use is. Verbs work great as first words of objectives, but work less well in key results. Verby KRs encourage people to incorrectly see KRs as tasks.

I don’t think we’ve come to terms with the fact that when everything is software, 85, 90, 95% of design for software has all the glamor of pipe-fitting. We’re not “changing the world.” By and large we’re making mundane tasks 5% less onerous (i we’re lucky).

The trap has been the attraction to what’s cool, which is usually superficial. All the true “change the world “ projects are mostly not cool, in the way designers think of it. The trendy work in tech has been centered on convenience for wealthy people for years, to your point.

… and so far, in 90% of cases, “we” do a lousy job at that, as evidenced by boatloads of shitty user experiences everywhere. Your tweet makes me wonder how much of that lack of true usability is, in fact, due to (at least some) designers’ assumption that work is glamorous.

This is worth highlighting. We train designers and tell them they’re going to be starchitects, when the majority will be the digital product equivalent of draftspeople. We don’t need ‘invention’ in 95% of software design. We need competent execution on well-known patterns.

Increasing trend: people talking about policy and rules for 'data'. 'You own your data', 'data should be portable', 'there should be a EU market/rules/rules for data'. The problem with this: there is no such fucking thing as 'data' 1/

My dad loves helping tourists in New York find their way. He once told me, "When giving directions, give it in three steps. That's all most people can remember." Sometimes I think I learned everything I need to know about user-centered design from this one bit of wisdom.
