I think I subconsciously believe something like ‘writing is fake’. It’s linked to the social constructedness of theories, negotiations, identities, communities etc. Hard to prioritize work in this category (persuasion, advocacy) Any idea for how to approach this weird belief?

Actually this was helpful - it reminds me of something I know but forget, which is that speech is of hugely varied qualities, and we often don’t have good ways of distinguishing ‘quality’ or ‘helpful’ speech from ‘wasteful’ or ‘pointless’ speech. Anyone have refs on this?

> so fluid as to be un-pin-downable and thus you can never change anything in this area successfully I think this is too hasty a conclusion. The word you're looking for is somewhere between 'legibility' and 'metis'.https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/03/16/book-review-seeing-like-a-state/ …

It may be related to metis-ness, but there’s also a concept of reflexivity/self-changingness that feels disorienting. Like, metis about farming feels practical, if subtle. Metis about politics feels related.

Honestly I feel similarly when coaching at Goal-Crafting Intensive workshops. I simultaneously feel like there's something really beautiful & positive that can happen, and also by default all interventions have absolutely no effect. Kind of freeing

That paragraph you linked doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I sense that the concept under it is valuable to what I’m thinking - is there any other description/reference for it that you think I might find clearer?

Good. Being overwhelmed by the vagueness of everything to the point of crippling paralysis is a crucial first step in epistemic honesty and wisdom. Writing is an attempt at taking a searing torch to the darkness. It never succeeds entirely, but it can succeed partially.
