Most kernel developers work in the kernel either for their employer, or to fix something that is personally bothering them. So either they ARE being paid for their contribution, or they chose their path. How much they get paid was their decision, they accepted the job.

Now consider the following. Linux Foundation, how much have YOU paid them for using their FREE product? Linux runs your phone, computer, router, plane, car, is the literal backbone of the internet, and so so so much more.

How do they do that? They build training courses, host conferences, they send swag, and money donations to local user groups and smaller conferences. They go to big corporations that USE and CONTRIBUTE and ASK them for donations.

So, why does their leadership get paid so much? Because asking BIG CORPORATIONS for BIG DONATIONS, and organizing training, and steering user contributions, and the plethora of other things they undertake is HARD WORK. They've earned it.

Ok all that said, do I agree with the way Linus has behaved? No. Never have. Am I glad to see some change? Yes. Will it be perfect? No, but we can always and will always continue trying.

Linus in some cases, went too far. In other cases he was simply protecting ALL of us by getting offensive to bring light to really stupid changes that people were trying to push. He was the guardian against the likes of the NSA, McAfee, and I am sure MANY, MANY more.

How many of you have taken the time to maintain a project and keep perfect composure? I'd dare say none. I am NOT excusing his behaviors. I am just shedding light that maybe every time he blew up, he went back to LF and said "I'm out" and LF freaked out and threw more money?

IDK, and neither do you. However, I can absolutely guarantee that the world is better off because of Linus and his salary, and saying your going to boycott the org because you feel like they don't manage the funds the way you want, is stupid.

If you want to get paid for the work you do on the kernel, find someone who uses that work, and ask them to pay you, or employ you.

Finally, if you don't like the way the Linux Foundation is doing it... Fork Linux, start your own non-profit, maintain your own Linux, build your own empire, and lay everyone who ever contributes. Only then, can you say you've earned the right to bitch about their structure.
