Puerto Rico hasn’t been independent since 1493... They got a glimpse of it (Charter of Autonomy 1897) literally before the US obtained PR in The Treaty of Paris 1898.

The "Autonomous Charter" was not "a glimpse" of independence at all. Spain still controlled Puerto Rico's defense and foreign relations, among other things, and the island's governor was still appointed by the monarchy in Madrid.

The taxpayers are going to give Puerto Rico $18.4 Billion but how much does the US Government collect from PR in taxes per year? Answer... about $3 Billion. Is it time for PR to go their own way.
