        They weren't. The X-15 used reaction control thrusters for high altitude flights where aerodynamic control was ineffective

        Good to know Maj.William Knight flew the X-15 to 277K ft high altitude to earn his astronaut's wing on this day in 1967!

        Think you may mean the Q-ball nosecone which measured the sideslip of the vehicle. Similar system was used on Saturn V launch escape systempic.twitter.com/sa8j0EEBWu
