Our #NaturalResourcesProgram staff and volunteers were out at the Ka'ala bog earlier today to help control a variety of invasive weed species along the boardwalk trail.

Some of the weed species they removed include prickly Florida blackberry (Rubus argutus), sticky snakeroot (Ageratina adenophora) and Portuguese lily (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora).

By controlling invasive weeds, light gaps are created allowing sunlight to shine on the forest floor, which encourages the growth of native seeds that are stored in the soil. Controlling aggressive weeds also removes the competition for water and nutrients.
