Maybe just happily paying taxes for other future students with money from their new job they got because they received a well-rounded, high-class education from a state university. Like a social karma type of thing.

Really? How? Government has always been involved. Maybe it's more complicated than a simple 'government being involved'. Such as lowering taxes (which cuts funding) but demanding more while providing le$$. For profit is for bottom line.
