Ultimately qanon gives people what most modern religious design does; a social ingroup that believes something strongly that the outgroup rejects strongly reinforcing the bonds of the ingroup. The centeal strong-but-absurd-to-an-outsider beliefs are a feature not a bug.

Deprogramming is hard because it means crossing into a new epiphenominal reality and rejecting your entire ingroup. Something humans are wired not to do.

I have no answers. It's an extremely effective design.

(It's also the basis of a ton of social virtue signalling lest you think yourself immune, I certainly am not, you just choose your ingroup)

the sudden emergence of massive millenarian cults has long been a hallmark of empires whose waning power and failing infrastructure are no longer able to address the day-to-day needs of their citizens

I have no idea what you're talking about. Millenarian cults are literally always in style. They were popular in the late 1800s, in the 1960s, and now that I think of it, there was a millenarian cult that popped up around 31AD, and the roman empire would go on for centuries after.

That could just as easily apply to any advocacy group. Including skeptics. Pro vaccine. Etc
