Census data is a fun data window into the past and a great rabbit hole to get lost in. Some of my favourite possible career paths in 1850👑

okay, one more of these maps - this is total number of people in 2011 (instead of %), in each Glasgow data zone who could speak, read or write Gaelic - zoom to see the raw numbers.

data from 1981 Census, question 8. Mapped figures include those who 'speak, read or write' Gaelic. Very high % of speakers (like my Mum) have Gaelic as first language but can't necessarily read or write it that well, but that's another story. Small % can only read or write it.

and finally (maybe), here are all the data zones in Scotland where the Gaelic figure is 5% or higher

here's a bit of zoomed-in detail on the 2011 figures, for anyone interested (1. Fort William and wider west to Ardnamurchan, 2. Inverness plus Black Isle etc, 3. Skye plus southern Hebrides, 4. Stornoway area)

I also did a 'Gaelic in 2011' version, using data zones - so, different geographic scale here but this is about what I'd expect to see (there are just under 7,000 data zones in Scotland, compared to nearly 18,000 enumeration districts in the 1981 map)

I've been experimenting with simple ways of displaying data recently, plus looking at historic data on Gaelic, so here's a simple map showing the % of people in each 1981 enumeration district who were Gaelic speakers - showing only the numbers, roughly coloured by value

anyway, this numbers-only thing probably only suitable for when a variable has a relatively smooth spatial gradient (like Gaelic) rather than something more randomly or messily distributed

and if you want to know your Skye Gaelic from your Mull Gaelic or Strathspey Gaelic then this is the kind of reference map you might need
