A question I’m interested in today is *why* the big tech firms are so ill-equipped to keep the mosque shooting videos off their platforms. They have incentive. They have resources. Where’s the breakdown, exactly?

Because their systems are built to blindly monetize content. This model of terrorism is a SEO strategy, and the platforms are easily weaponized information infrastructures. To be manageable they would have to be different creatures.https://datasociety.net/output/media-manipulation-and-disinfo-online/ …

I think this is right, in terms of the big picture. Also interested in the finer-grained mechanics of why media/activists can easily find the videos even now, with content moderation efforts in full effect.

I think because machine learning takes time to train and they never bothered to train it against white meme-throwing terrorists because they have a cultural blind spot.

It's like the face algorithm that couldn't see black people or the Google one that mis-classified them as monkeys and wasn't fixable. Or Google surfacing holocaust denial in search. These are all problems that surface from a lack of diversity & forward thinking in the ML group.

I agree, but I also don't think it's sufficient. If, overnight, the ML team @ YouTube looked like a liberal arts college brochure, would the incentives to algorithmically monetize all content be altered? IMHO the product needs to change significantly to avoid this cycle.

I agree, but having better incentives with the wrong team won't solve the problem either. Both need to be fixed to address the mechanical issues properly.
