A monoid is a pipeline of functions. e.g. cat x | sort | uniq ; or F(G(H(x))). A monad is a monoid with smart pipes.

The reverse is true: unary functions that have the same type for input and output along with function composition and the identity function form a monoid, but there are many other monoids that are very useful.
