Envy drives the economy. Each of us is envious of someone else. The closer they are to us, the more we want to see them fail. This is why siblings need to find drastically different occupations. What breaks this spell?
It's not absolute levels of wealth or poverty that makes us unhappy, but relative wealth and poverty. The dark side of human nature is that you'll be more happy if the people around you are the same or poorer than you than if they are richer than you. Explains a lot.

I am not envious of people who are dissimilar to me. But those who are too similar to me, who look like they are getting attention rather successfully, do invite comparison, envy, and I am at a loss to explain.

From my experience of vipassana meditation I have found that consciousness in a natural comfortable state, is quiet, contented, and satiated. But when it is provoked, consciousness will almost compulsively seek attention-seeking behavior, similar to a peacock display.
