(1) "free software" originally protected buyers to be able to extend/modify/fix software, to be able to write drivers and fix bugs in proprietary systems (protecting the rights of software *developers* who were the only users of computers at the start)...

... "free software" also protected the rights of creators, so they could continue to use the code they had created, even independent of what company they worked for (yet at the beginning software was rarely created by unpaid labor)...
