Six days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, #OTD in 1941, CDR William Sullivan (left) was appointed the first Supervisor of Salvage.
Under his leadership, 9 Pearl Harbor ships were refloated in 3 months, the first Navy salvage school was founded, and USS Lafayette was refloated.

Anchored 350 yards away, USS Mindanao (ARG-3) suffered heavy damage from the USS Mount Hood explosion. Fragments punched holes throughout the hull and superstructure. 180 of the Mindanao's crewman were killed and injured in the incident.

#OTD in 1944, the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11) exploded near Papua New Guinea. The blast was so violent that it destroyed 22 other vessels. 295 sailors on board the Mount Hood were obliterated, their remains never found. The cause of the disaster was never determined.
