    Last week I resigned as external examiner for in solidarity with 's escalation of the disputes over attacks on our pensions, shameful pay inequalities, decades of falling pay, rampant casualisation, and excessive workloads. One of many examiners resigning.

    Academics are unilaterally resigning as external examiners from UK universities External examiners are essential in maintaining the academic standards of the sector But the behaviour of vice chancellors has pushed them to breaking point

    Is employing tens of thousands of staff on exploitative, insecure contracts whilst hoarding billions in reserves the result of an 'ideological fixation' or is it just Sensible Management ™️? Asking for the tens of thousands of university staff denied secure employment

    We will be on strike for 5 consecutive days on week commencing 21 March because senior management are still not meaningfully negotiating with staff who are casualised, underpaid, overworked & whose pensions have been cut by 35%

    I don't want to go on strike. I want to do my job. I want to be paid fairly for it and have decent working conditions and a decent pension. let's sort this out and get back to work

    It’s not what any uni staff want to do, but UUK’s actions have forced our hand.

    VCs could easily end this dispute and prevent further disruption in our universities, but they would rather attack the pensions, pay and working conditions of their own staff and damage the sector at the same time. Students and staff alike deserve better leadership than this, and we hope that this action and our reballot of members for future action will make employers see sense. ‘Universities in the UK bring in tens of billions in income each year and have tens of billions more hoarded in their reserves. There is no justification whatsoever for slashing staff pensions or refusing to take action over falling pay, shocking equality pay gaps, rampant casualisation and unsafe workloads. For years our union has been offering sensible and deliverable solutions that would benefit staff, students and the entire sector, but employers are just not interested.
