    This graph (shown during today’s press conference) confirms that colleges & universities must not be treated like schools. Infection rates among 17-21 year olds is at 50 in 100,000 & increasing sharply. These are the main age groups found in FE colleges & universities

    The Tories commitment to a dysfunctional marketised HE sector has led the Prime Minister to encourage students to move to campus for a student experience universities cannot provide, & to pay for accommodation that they will likely end up trapped in for long periods of time.

    . talks about “reopening universities”, ignorant to the fact they never closed. He says universities will be requested not send students home in the event of an outbreak. The PM should be working to prevent avoidable outbreaks, not creating the conditions for them.

    The Government hasn't done enough to ensure that the reopening of universities is safe for students, staff and the wider community. Today I urged it to get a grip and listen to scientific advisors, , and and support universities move to online learning by default.

    A spokesperson said if the University of Liverpool maximises online teaching then it can minimise the risk: "There is so much anxiety and uncertainty about this for students and staff and we would like to see take this position now."

    Jo said students have been told to move, live, socialise and work together and that blaming students for doing things they have been encouraged to do is no solution to the problem.
