A wonderful Ramadan thread. This picture illustrates my teaching pages on symmetry. Just glorious!

Round 2: This time with a better lid on the thermos.

So I checked and it seems the heat leak around the lid was quite significant. Today I tried sealing the flask with it's stopper and 'cup' cover and opening it up periodically. Cooling rate now looks to be around 20% less - closer to 2.5 °C/hour.

A Lab_14-style experiment: Cooling curves for boiling water in a thermos flask. But there's a problem…

Cooling rate appears to be 3 °C/hour. I couldn't seal the lid fully because I put a thermocouple in the flask. I'll check today if the small heat leak around the lid made a difference.

300 cooling curves looked at. Only another 400 or so to go. Remarkably interesting in a rather repetitive sort of way. Is this a cut-away of the Babylonian ziggurat or the staircase of the Temple of the Sun in Palenque?

An intriguing plot of domestic carbon emissions from a student whose family lives deep in Siberia. Quite a seasonal variation! Figures for travel not checked but intriguing all the same.

Lots of interesting pics on the . For example, it seems that some got a chance to do their experiments in a lab, perhaps back at their school. Look at this lovely spirit lamp! It looks like fun and we hope you shared your experiments with younger students!

A superb introduction to how to judge a scientific paper. Every student should follow this through (exam revision permitting).

Still one of the great challenges of chemistry. Binding the nitrogen to a metal as a ligand is just the start.

Finally is out, our super cheap, easy to produce in millions, almost universal, and with low waste impact nucleic acid detection (LAMP test for #COVID19) non-instrumental device. The answer is: a Nespresso capsule. The question is: why we did this? 1/n chemrxiv.org/articles/prepr

I loved Lewis. Wonderful man. An inspiration. Charming, large-hearted, brilliant and wise. I’ll miss the light in his eye when he was trying to start an argument. If there is a God, Lewis will be one atheist she/he’ll definitely want in heaven. Where they’ll be arguing.

I am very sad to hear that the great developmental biologist Lewis Wolpert died this morning at the age of 91. He was a giant in my field, and will be missed.
