There are a number of wild species camellias in bloom in the Asian Area! This is a 1954 accession of Camellia pitardii var. yunnanica from China. A lovely large shrub or small tree, the fruit contain relatively large, glossy brown seeds from which a high quality oil is produced.

Newt breeding season 2020 has begun! The males arrive in the pond first and recently some females have begun to show up. Check out this mating newt ball, and the one male that took a break to get a breath of fresh air.

One of my favorite floral scents in the Garden is the fragrance of Luculia gratissima, in bloom now (and for months) in several locations in the Asian Area. A large shrub from the Himalayas and southern China, look for it along the bottom of the lawn in the Himalayan beds.

This is the geophyte Boophone haemanthoides, from the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Coming out of dormancy it displays a beautiful fan of wavy-edged, blue-gray leaves. As conditions dry out it goes dormant. Look for a brush of whitish flowers in the spring or summer.

While winter is fast approaching, the Garden is still filled with Fall color. This Japanese-type maple (Acer sp.) is growing in a blanket of Bergenia crassifolia in the Asian Area along the lower road by the stone bridge.
