Isn't this a hugely popular activity in Canada? Rinks are constantly full, we have more rinks than any other country...

Yes, of course skating is hugely popular. But not I'm the morning and for cardio exercise, à la running. That's what I'm wondering about: why is skating viewed as a recreation solely, and not a thing to do for daily cardio?

In Montreal? Rinks were always well populated when I lived there. Maybe not in the early mornings mind you... Man I miss MTL sometimes

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, there are tons of people skating on the weekends, and for fun. But it doesn't seem to be a thing people do for rigorous daily exercise, like running.

Totally. A frozen lake/river is one of my favourite things in the world.

In Sweden this is pretty big. But you don't go on skating rinks for that: boring as heck. Instead you take to the lakes, much more fun!

Couldn't agree more, frozen lakes are the absolute best.

I'm curious why more people in northern climates don't skate for exercise in the winter? I had the rink to myself this morning, but I always see people running/slipping along icy sidewalks...
