The Mayor of Mercer Island, Salim Nice, just asked consultants working on the city's climate action plan whether adding houses near frequent transit via zoning changes would be "cutting your nose off to spite your face" in terms of impact on the city's overall emissions goals.

In February, Nice wrote to the 41st district legislative delegation opposing a statewide Missing Middle housing bill, claiming HB 1782 would have "prevent[ed] the City from managing growth within the bounds of sustainability."

At tonight's meeting, Nice stated that Mercer Island's population is already 1,000 more people than what it was "supposed to have been" in 2035. Between 2010 and 2021, Mercer Island added 3,091 people.

Mercer Island is poised to extend the development moratorium on the multiuse district near its Sound Transit light rail station at its next meeting. The moratorium has been in place since mid-2020 while the city considers code amendments around retail space there.
