I have some exciting news to share! As much as I love Virginia, I cannot stay away from Kentucky. Starting in the fall I will be returning to my hometown as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Pikeville.

We often tend to interpret today's polarization as a sign of politicization. In this piece for I argue that it is on the contrary because of depoliticization that we can so carelessly address each other without fear of consequences. 👇

"There is in the Anglican identity a strong element of awareness of the tragic, of the dark night and the frustration of theory and order by the strangeness of God's work." - Rowan Williams

"We in Europe must break ourselves of the habit of thinking in terms of national states... the West must organize itself in full consciousness of its strength. In Europe the answer is integration. The process of integration... is also a process of regeneration." Konrad Adenauer

Absolutely fantastic review of “The Case for Christian Nationalism” by . He eloquently shows why the book fails to offer a remotely compelling theological or political vision.

I'm very excited to share a rare bit of my writing (via @LawLiberty): a review Stephen Wolfe's 2022 book 'The Case for Christian Nationalism,' which, in my opinion, reveals a deep epistemic problem with Christian nationalism as an ideology. lawliberty.org/book-review/yo

If I can ever find a Cartier Tank Americaine under 5k and in reasonable condition, I really will spend more money than I ever should on a watch.

The problem is that people think that utopia, paradise, a savior, can come from politics. The purpose of politics is not to build a ideologically ordained utopia, it’s to make a world that gets a little better every day. Find a savior on your own time. It’s not the state.

Liberalism, bereft of eschatology, will never sate the soul. There is no ideal, no savior; there is only endless tinkering. Communism’s illusions are enticing because there’s a paradise; there’s satori for the devotee. People need a dream.

"Few changes are without cost, but even when the cost is minimal, or temporary, or outweighed by the benefit, the anxiety generated by change, even a change for the better, is itself a considerable social cost." Can't help but be struck by this Himmelfarbian insight

Great quote from H.A.L. Fisher appreciating chance, contingency, and the tenuousness of progress: “Men wiser and more learned than I have discerned in history a plot, a rhythm, a predetermined pattern. These harmonies are concealed from me. I can see only one emergency/

This argument has a lot going for it: We pay a lot for them, we should get our money's worth; it does not matter what you wear under them, so we can dress casual and still look great; and perhaps most importantly it makes one feel like a wizard

"No more the small platoons, beloved of Edmund Burke. Each unit of society must be modeled on society itself. The result is the ever greater politicization of that society." - Daniel Patrick Moynihan, 1977

As easy it is for Americans to mock the over the top nature of the monarchy we treat our President much the same way. Like in Britain the PM gets a literal townhouse and almost nothing else whereas our president gets a mansion, country estate and the worlds nicest private jet.
