even though those questions were asked at 30 minute open forum, one of two that the Provost participates in annually.

You can check out disciplinary reports online: ppl who plagiarized are punished more harshly than those found guilty of sexual assault.
-
UChicago is under investigation by the Dept of Ed's Office of Civil Rights bc of its history of not supporting survivors of sexual assault
-
In this regard, it's clear that UChicago is not a "safe space" -- for women, queer ppl, and all ppl who experience sexual violence
-
So, to get to the point: on so many of these issues,
@UChicago is primarily interested in public perception & its bottom line -
Incredibly,
@UChicago *has* a Safe Space program that it regularly promotes internally and to prospective students: https://lgbtq.uchicago.edu/page/safe-space -
Decision makers (Pres/Provost/BoT) rarely if ever directly interact with students & are kept insulated from any sort of "critical discourse"
-
The direct superior of the dean who wrote this letter is the one who told me I failed to "manage" the open forum with our Provost...
-
Evidently, our Provost felt it was an unsafe space for him because he was asked questions that challenge him & his worldview!
-
If you're interested, more on that here: https://www.facebook.com/tbkissinger/posts/10209882706239803 …
-
On issue after issue,
@UChicago tries to have its cake and eat it too. And PR pops like this help it keep a reputation for "free inquiry" -
Even though it constantly eschews that same standard on every facet of its internal governance. It's a model for corporate higher ed studies
-
Even journalists are banned from recording on campus without prior written permission from the Communications Office!
-
That's to limit the coverage of protests and other forms of dissent that take place on campus, such as the spring sit-in.
-
To close, safe spaces certainly exist at UChicago. But they exist for & are maintained by administrators, not students or community members.
-
The cherry on top: Zimmer canceled his once-per-quarter meeting with
@UChicagoSG following this spring's sit-in!http://www.wsj.com/articles/free-speech-is-the-basis-of-a-true-education-1472164801 … -
And apologies for the many issues I didn't have the space to incorporate into this: lack of ADA compliance, poor mental healthcare access...
-
affordability, exploitation of international students, suppression of grad student organizing & unionization (h/t
@uchicagogsu), and more.

As I understand it, "working to improve" amounted to little but "accept accusations as proof" ala classic witch hunts.

By "improve the sexual assault policy," do you mean "remove men's due process rights?"
