Open source / free software needs more UX designers far more than it needs more programmers.
This tweet prompted by a "Settings" dialog on a popular open source emulator with three (3) "Save" buttons on it, only one of which actually saves and applies the changed settings. The other two... do something? Maybe? I'm not sure what their purpose is.
Having had to use Windows for about a year, this is also true of commericial software and 7000x as true of “Enterprise” web apps.
More, or better?
More. People who are primarily in UX don't often contribute to open source, so UX design is often just done by normal programmers with barely any experience in the matter, just trying to do their best.
But who is going to implement those UX design concepts when no open source programmer accepts to be told what to do.
Ux may be usefull... but only if there is a decent leadership for the project
To be fair, have you ever read the man page for tar or ffmpeg?
IMHO software development (in general, not just libre/open) needs more programmers with knowledge in typography. I pitty the UX people who have to work with the criminally bad abominations that have been cooked by programmers ignorant on the subject on how to properly layout.
