I thought the point was to criticize that mindset. Like, the princess ends up with the Knight in the end, and that's what throws the protagonist's narrative into question. He seeks her out, but thinks more of her as an idea than a person.

He does regretable things to get to her, and ultimately that's what drives her away. We're supposed to view the protagonist as the bad guy.
