    Has anyone pointed out the mild irony that the Chinese word for plague, shǔyì 鼠疫, has the character for "rat/mouse" in it?

    Happy new year everyone. 2020 and the Year of the Rat (almost, ok, technically still Year of the Pig) are proving to be pretty crummy so far.

    Fascinating stuff! Perec’s novel “La disparition” had no letter ‘e’s , and Shanghai writer程庸’s novel 《官窑美人》is completely devoid of the character 的。In some abstract sense these two novels are “translations” of one another. Chinese writers have Oulipo resonances.

    I love looking at people’s lock screens because NOT ONLY is it a glimpse into another world (cool, secret) BUT ALSO it will be that person’s best and most favourite picture of something very dear to them (great cat, laughing baby, a nice vista)
