I always felt like the historical view of them was more a result of everyone in Western Europe feeling somewhat awkward that the Fourth Crusade kind of did the Byzantines in and wanting to retroactively justify it.

So what you're saying is that Istanbul was Constantinople, now it's Istanbul not Constantinople. Why it's Istanbul not Constantinople is surely nobody's business but the Turks?
