I think our results are consistent with various interpretations on what drove the relation between the marshmallow test and later achievement. We controlled for SES, as well as parenting factors and early measures of cognitive development....

We found that in combination, all of those controls reduced the effect of the test on later achievement. So, it’s difficult to say which control was most important and and all of those factors are correlated with one another.
