Remember how Ebert would sometimes screen a film with an audience and if anyone yelled STOP he'd pause the film and they'd talk about it? https://www.rogerebert.com/rogers-journal/how-to-read-a-movie … It would be a real experience to do something similar with "Mad Max: Fury Road".

In terms of action pieces, the final chase has SO MUCH STORYTELLING IN IT. It's almost criminal how well the choreography, cinematography, stunts and editing all work together.pic.twitter.com/rA6InELgox

I'm sure connective moments were "found" in the edit, but a great deal of planning and care was required to create the individual pieces.pic.twitter.com/jmVlDx5SsD

These cuts are not random. The edit builds and builds and builds. It's all about momentum. The stakes keep getting higher. And the action is always personal, never clinical or objective. The audience feels the danger.pic.twitter.com/3jcUuyOtmu

In any other movie, this many cuts in such a short sequence [including two shots of a hallucination!] would be a crime. Look at how the sequence is put together. There's no confusion. You know what's happening. This isn't quick cutting solely to simulate energy - it IS energy.pic.twitter.com/5NPK3Okeh6

Framing (frequently center framing the action), careful attention to the 180° line, consistent eyelines and cutting precisely when a cut needs to happen allow the audience go along for the ride, rather than bombard them with seemingly random, unrelated shots that don't connect.pic.twitter.com/hKRxCZ8Pei

      You never storyboard?
No. The ability to stage well is a skill and a talent that I value above almost everything else. And I say that because there are people who do it better than I'll ever be able to do it after 40 years of active study. I just watched Mad Max: Fury Road again last week, and I tell you I couldn't direct 30 seconds of that. I'd put a gun in my mouth. I don't understand how [George Miller] does that,

This whole interview with “Fury Road” editor Margaret Sixel is fantastic. Interview by @stevehullfish for ProVideo Coalition. https://www.provideocoalition.com/art-cut-margaret-sixel-editor-mad-max-fury-road/ …pic.twitter.com/zkgmI9EIpF

How do you use temp music?

George doesn’t like to cut with temp music. In fact we cut silently for a long time except obviously for the dialogue scenes. But he allowed me to use temp score for our first screening. We used an eclectic mix of music ranging from The Social Network, Led Zeppelin, Japanese taiko drumming, opera to more obscure European composers.”

Great stuff. Just wish I felt I'd seen the same movie. First 20mins a blizzard of random, almost parody 'Mad Max' images, with no person to get hold of, except Tom running a lot. It got better but the beginning was fatal. Know I'm in a minority here. Should prob watch again...
