Check out the noggin on this guy! The aptly named Loggerhead Musk Turtle (Sternotherus minor minor) is equipped with huge, powerful jaws that allow them to crush snails, which are their favorite food.

This beauty is a four-eyed turtle. Its name, as you might have guessed, refers to the bright yellow spots that occur on the back of its head, closely resembling extra pairs of eyes. Photograph taken

Critically endangered, they have been poached to the edge of extinction. Thankfully, conservationists around the world have preserved this species through the maintenance of captive assurance colonies w the hope of releasing them back into the wilds of Myanmar where they belong!pic.twitter.com/zPv5G0zD4t

Every turtle & tortoise hatched at our
#ConservationCenter is a symbol of hope for species at the brink of extinction. Here’s a brand new Burmese Star Tortoise (G. platynota) making their grand entrance! This little one has no idea how special they truly are.pic.twitter.com/pVskQat5fy

In addition to rampant poaching, they have lost more than 70% of their habitat in just 3 generations, which has lead to a population decline of at least 60%.

This snail is hitching a ride on the back of a peaceful (probably oblivious) Flat-tailed Tortoise. This unique little tortoise is just one of the beautiful, endemic tortoises of Madagascar facing extinction.

The alligator snapping turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in North America. Found at the bottom of muddy rivers, lakes and canals throughout the southeastern US, these turtles hunt by lying motionless at the bottom of these bodies of water. Photo taken

It’s a great defense against natural predation, but that awesome shell doesn’t work to protect it from habitat destruction & poaching, & as a result they are Critically Endangered. We care for an assurance colony of them at our center with the hope that one day we won't have to.pic.twitter.com/Wsp1H8O7fb

This Pancake Tortoise might look like he’s stuck between a rock & a hard place, but that’s exactly what he‘s going for! They‘re quite unique, the most obvious characteristic being that flat-as-a-pancake shell that it can expand to wedge itself into crevices to evade predators.pic.twitter.com/blLmAZ05VP

Caution: Looking into those eyes may cause feelings of intense love & devotion. The world’s smallest species of tortoise will do that. The Speckled Padloper is endemic to a small region of South Africa. Threatened by roads, habitat destruction, & poaching, they are

Tortoises are like living art. Masterpieces that are more precious than the most beautiful paintings. Here are three of the world’s most beautiful, the Radiated Tortoise, Speckled Cape Tortoise & Burmese Star Tortoise. All 3 were born right here at the TC Conservation Center.pic.twitter.com/qriKp4ytFx

We have no idea what’s going on here other than the fact that Carrie Fisher is holding a Russian Tortoise but that’s enough for us.

That’s why we recently purchased even more of this habitat, and are always working to expand that protection, which also extends to all other native flora and fauna, including an estimated 70 mammals, over 200 bird species, 8 amphibians, and 44 reptiles!

They inhabit a small area of Bolsón de Mapimí in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico. The Mapimí Biosphere Reserve was created to protect this species, but much of this land is used for agricultural development & cattle grazing, which is threatening the tortoise’s habitat.

Bolson Tortoises construct their own burrows with their powerful legs, where they spend 95% of their time. They generally only leave to eat and mate. Being very solitary animals, they are highly defensive of their burrows and will protect their holes from other Bolson Tortoises.pic.twitter.com/zqi1ooqsMx
