If the welfare state should provide us only with enough to "not die," the welfare state needs to shrink dramatically. The welfare state is premised on ensuring dignity, not merely survival. Do you think people can maintain their dignity with no access to intimacy?

If "access to intimacy" is denied because the other party is not interested, the other party's dignity of refusal takes priority.

I agree with you completely. But to pretend that access to intimacy has nothing to do with dignity, or that the welfare state has no business thinking about this because it should only give what is "necessary to survive" is crazy

Increased access to mental health services would be helpful in that regard, to examine someone's barriers to building meaningful connections. But guaranteed physical intimacy is not a reasonable expectation, and it is certainly not more important than the right to say, "no."

Yes! I agree. The earlier responses were arguing that intimacy has nothing to do with dignity. Of course it does - but that doesn't mean you can then violate someone else's autonomy to deal with the dignitary harms of lack of intimacy.

The attacks on women/nb femmes' dignity from sexual assault, battery, and murder is far more egregious than the lack of dignity associated with male loneliness.

Two things can be true: 1. men who involuntarily lack intimacy experience very real, serious dignitary harms 2. forcing any woman to have sex with a man to solve that is an even more egregious violation of her dignity. Feeling threatened by these men doesn't change any of this

What it does change is the need to shift attention AWAY from what men need, because that is all our society has been focused on for centuries, and TOWARDS treating women/nb femmes like human beings.

I think we both share the goal of minimizing how many incels go on violent rampages. If we can't even talk about the problem as implicating human dignity, how can we solve it?

Prioritizing the people who are actually marginalized over lonely incels who don't examine their own toxic behaviors. Which will not happen, as as people are responding to legitimate incel criticism as, "But the indignity of singleness!"

I'd argue that incels, due to various mental illnesses and an inability to make human connections, are highly marginalized. If you can't diagnose the problem, you'll never solve it. Waiting for incels to realize they're awful isn't a solution. They won't.

And see, that association of mental health issues with violence is where you lose me. Plenty of women/nb femmes have MI, PTSD, etc, but do not turn to violence because of it. Violence is an internal values problem, and it is not our job to convince you not to fucking murder us.

Collect your violent incels and school them. They will listen to you. Better yet, call them out BEFORE they are violent.

Collect them and school them? If you think that a rancid nest of misogynists is going to listen to feminists tell them that their behavior is problematic, you're in for a rude awakening.

If you think it'd be bad for YOU to call themout, imagine how hard it'd be for women/nb femmes. But that's what you're asking for. What solution do we (women/nb femmes) have to offer, to ensure lonely men are no longer violent towards us.

Men need to call other men out. Not to change the minds of rabid MRAs or incels, but to send a message to others who are watching, who aren't as resolute.

Get rid of "safe spaces" for misogyny, transphobia, racism, etc. Yes, it's fucking hard. But if you're not willing to do the work, take your dignity plea and demand emotional labor elsewhere. In the meantime, we'll have our hands full defending our humanity by ourselves. ✌
