, , and I wrote a response to last week's WSJ op-ed by . "The notion of 'genetic potential' is deeply problematic and misleading."

Hot take: I put the trivializing idea that polygenic scores for IQ somehow offer a way to weed out pesky racism in this week's "misses" category. 🤦‍♀️ 1. Polygenic scores are only as good as phenotypes 2. Phenotypes don't escape societal influences

“Polygenic scores are revolutionary because they are causal in only one direction. They don’t drop because tests make you nervous or rise because you grew up rich. They’re impervious to racism and other forms of prejudice.”

A really daft paragraph. Imagine society discriminates against (say) short people. Then as height has a genetic basis, so will discrimination, and so discrimination will built into PGS of traits affected by discrimination.

All sorts of factors that may affect test scores from testing anxiety to discrimination against parents will have a partially genetic basis and so maybe built into test score PGS.

The predictions formed by polygenic scores do not reflect something "innate" to an individual, but merely reflect sources of variation within a society. If that society is unfair that unfairness may be baked into polygenic scores.

PGS offers an amazing tool for all sorts of research, including social sciences, but they are not a magic bullet and we should be very sceptical of anyone who seeks easy answers to policy questions from them
