Kevin McCarthy moved no closer to securing the speaker’s gavel after a second ballot in the floor election Tuesday.
And so far he's losing support on the third ballot.

Quorum call confirmed all 434 recently elected members (-McEachin who died a few weeks after the election) are present for the 118th Congress.
That means 218 is still the majority threshold McCarthy needs to reach to become speaker, unless "present" votes come into play.

The Senate recessed instead of adjourning yesterday so they could fast-track the rail labor measure onto the Senate calendar today. No timeline announced yet to vote on passage, but this would allow them to file cloture tomorrow if needed.
