China= People's Republic of China Taiwan= Republic of China Though being confusing, there are at least Two Chinas, or One China One Taiwan. Nothing like One China exists.

The leader of Taiwan's Deaf Association believes TSL has undergone structural changes from its contact with Mandarin Chinese, and that this change involves the fact that the gov't knows nothing about TSL as a language, a sign language developed from Japanese Sign Language.

In the earlier bill, TSL was referred to as only 'sign language' and listed together with 'new immigrants' languages'. After the protest from Deaf community, the term 'Taiwan Sign Language' was used in the bill and listed with 'natural languages of local communities'.

There has always been a debate over whether to abandon Zhuyin and adopt hanyu pinyin. Anyway, happy birthday Bopomofo!

True. Participants in my previous study usually go to places like chain supermarkets or 7-11, with standardised transaction processes, rather than traditional marketplaces, where they need to bargain with hearing vendors.

I think using the toilet is a basic human right. It should not be prevented by a stupid passcode.

I also just realized this point for my English writing recently. Coz in Mandarin, the equivalent term for 'speaker', shi yong zhe, literally means 'user'. Or we tend to use verb hui (can do sth) more. So both signer and speaker would be translated as 'user' in Mandarin.

Challenged by a reader below my latest media article, for I seemed to write a sentence with Taiwan Mandarin grammar. He said 'how come a person with a linguistics master's doesn't even know how to use "proper Mandarin"?' I was almost to give him poop emoji. 💩

Why not just see the linguistic features identified by pathologists as sociolinguistic variation? Can we really take features of 'dialects' apart and refer to the rest as disorder? 🤔🤔🤔

When I was on the way to my first participant's home, a grandma asked me for help to use my phone hiring a taxi for her. And my first interview turned out very good. I should be written in the textbook-- HELP others on the way to the interview.

Joined a city tour during my transit in Dubai. As the only East Asian in the group, the local merchant first used Vietnamese greeting xin chao to try to attract me. And then Mandarin nihao, Japanese konichiwa. I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese.
