and these BIPoC anthropologists end up in interdisciplinary depts. I can't remember where I saw it, but it's harder for the faculty in interdisciplinary depts -- that makes it harder for these BIPoC anthropologists to survive in academia.

once upon a time, i asked an anthro prof if i could get a joint PhD in anthropology & gender studies. "no, if you wanna be an anthropologist, you need to commit yourself to anthro PhD program," they said.

what makes one an anthropologist? how do we make sense of the institution of anthropology that disrespects, negates, and shoves away an anthropologist who fights w the institution? who is behind the institution? (and no I'm not going to mary douglas' "institution" stuff)?
