100 years ago a white mob destroyed one of the wealthiest Black communities in America, killing hundreds. It’s a tragedy that’s been buried for a century, but still felt. I went looking for the truth. Watch our doc, Blood On Black Wall Street on MSNBC this Sunday at 10pm ET

But as Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father told me, “strength really doesn't mean that you feel strong. It means that you show up anyway.” And show up they have.

“I gave America Trayvon,” his mom, Sybrina Fulton told me the other day. “Trayvon belongs to America.” Such a deeply profound, wrenching thought. A mother gifting her son’s memory and meaning. A parent should never know such sacrifice or conjure such strength.

Trayvon Martin, like Emmett Till before him, was cut short by white violence, an unwilling martyr who became and shaped history.

Trayvon was a boy, taken too soon, too violently, 10 years ago today. He’d be 27 now, a man. Who knows who he would’ve become. But as much as he’s meant in death, he meant so much more, in life.
